PLAYER RATINGS: Kalidou Koulibaly and James Tarkowski impress on debut as Chelsea beat Everton 1-0

Jorginho’s penalty at the end of the first-half helped Chelsea narrowly beat Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park and secure a winning start to the new Premier League campaign.

Frank Lampard’s side were struck with an injury blow early on as Ben Godfrey was stretchered off with a nasty lower leg injury.

Debutant Raheem Sterling also had a goal disallowed for offside after Jordan Pickford parried N’Golo Kante’s shot into his path, but the flag denied the star signing a first Premier League goal at his new club.

Manchester United interested in signing Marko Arnautovic

Manchester United are interested in signing former West Ham and Stoke forward Marko Arnautovic.

Erik ten Hag has added defenders Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia along with creative midfielder Christian Eriksen to his squad this summer, but he has been unable to strengthen his front line yet.

Ten Hag wants to rectify this, and has turned his attention to Arnautovic.

During his previous spells in England, Arnautovic demonstrated his ability to play out wide or through the middle, and Sportsmail understands that his versatility makes him an appealing option for United, while he is also expected to be inexpensive.

The Red Devils have submitted an €8million (£6.8m) offer for the Bologna striker, according to The Athletic.

United’s need to bring in another attacker has become more pressing in recent weeks following the news that Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave the club.

The Portuguese star missed the team’s pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, and his future remains uncertain after he was left on the bench for United’s opening game of the season against Brighton on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Anthony Martial – who impressed in pre-season – is currently ruled out with a hamstring problem, which forced ten Hag to play Bruno Fernandes as a central striker against Graham Potter’s men.

Ten Hag and his assistant Steve McClaren have worked with Arnautovic before, as the Austrian played under the pair at Dutch side FC Twente when he was making his way in senior football.

Arnautovic went on to play 184 Premier League games in his time at Stoke and West Ham, although he has not featured in England’s top flight since 2019.

The 33-year-old finished as Bologna’s top scorer last term, netting 14 Serie A goals for the Italian side.

‘He’s a national treasure!’: Fans on social media celebrate Ian Wright’s choice to wear a pink shirt

Users on social media have lauded Ian Wright’s decision to wear a pink shirt during Match of the Day’s first broadcast of the season.

The Arsenal legend has drawn praise online as he subtly responded to Lord Alan Sugar’s distasteful rant which questioned the colour choice for the Gunners’ new third kit.

Wright, who donned a bright pink top in the studio on Saturday night, clearly did not agree with the former Spurs chairman’s opinion – and is now being heralded across social media.

Watching Arsenal’s season opener against Crystal Palace on Friday, Lord Sugar tweeted: ‘Pink shirts ! I wonder if @IanWright0 would have played in a pink shirt.’

Evidently, it’s not an issue that concerns Wright who made his statement last night – and fans were full of praise for that decision.

One fan said: ‘Even as an ardent Spurs fan @IanWright0 is a total LEGEND’, while another wrote ‘There is nobody better than @IanWright0’.

This is not the first time in recent weeks that the two figures have clashed online – as Wright hit out at Lord Sugar for his ‘f***ing foolishness’ after he claimed the BBC introduced male pundits because Sugar called them out for ‘sexist’ all-women panels.

BBC presenter Gabby Logan was quick to brand Lord Sugar a ‘parody’ and now Wright responded by slamming his comments, labelling them ‘laughable’.

‘Alan, the thing is my friend, rather than just saying “I got it wrong, lots of men are working at all levels of the tournament”, you doubled down on some complete f***ing foolishness.

Erik ten Hag warns Cristiano Ronaldo ‘will take time’ after being left out of Man United clash

Erik ten Hag has insisted it ‘will take time’ before Cristiano Ronaldo is ready to start after leaving the wantaway forward on the bench for Manchester United’s Premier League opener.

The Red Devils host Brighton on Sunday afternoon in new manager Ten Hag’s first competitive game in charge, and the former Ajax boss has already made the big decision to leave out their star player, who has admitted he wants to leave.

Pundit Roy Keane, a United icon, called it a ‘straightforward call’, with fellow pundits Micah Richards and Karen Carney also in agreement.

Ten Hag said: ‘He’s working really hard and it will take time. We have to see, I cannot see because it depends on how quick he is progressing. We will do everything and he will do everything.

‘As a striker it can be Bruno but I think the most advanced will be Christian Eriksen. We got Eriksen and Martinez in to strengthen the team. I want to see a team performance… It’s a tough opponent, they can play different systems.’

Keane said: ‘I think it’s a pretty straightforward call. He’s only had 45 minutes of pre-season. I think he’s probably thinking we fancy our chances of beating Brighton.

‘From a footballing point of view it’s a straightforward call. He needs more minutes under his belt.’

Former Manchester City and England defender Richards added: ‘I think it’s the right call. It’s Ronaldo, they’ve got to make a decision – they’ve either got to integrate him in the squad.

‘If a player disrespects the manager you can rebuild that. But this is Ronaldo we’re talking about.’

Christian Eriksen – generally used in midfield – starts up front for United against Graham Potter’s side, with Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho behind him and Lisandro Martinez making his competitive debut at centre back.

And former England women’s star Carney continued: ‘Maybe if you started him and he’s only played 45 minutes what precedent does that set for the rest of the team? He’s not ready.’

Jamie Redknapp left red-faced with false comment on Chelsea star Thiago Silva live on TV

Jamie Redknapp was left red-faced after making an incorrect comment regarding Chelsea defender Thiago Silva which was picked up on by Blues fans. The former Tottenham midfielder was in the Sky Sports studio as a pundit for Chelsea’s opening day 1-0 win away to Everton when he made an error live on air.

The Brazilian centre-back put in a stellar performance alongside captain Cesar Azpilicueta and new signing Kalidou Koulibaly, and prompted rave reviews from pundits including Redknapp. However, as the former England midfielder was praising Silva he mentioned that one of football’s top prizes – the Champions League – still eluded the 37-year-old but Silva won it with Chelsea just two seasons ago.

“Amazing player,” Redknapp told Sky Sports. “He’s just got this ability, it’s like a magnet, he’s so calm. One of the great defenders I think we’ve ever seen. I think he’s won 23 major trophies, the only thing that has evaded him is the Champions League.

“That might be why he’s not in the bracket of [Paolo] Maldini, [Franco] Baresi, he is one of the great defenders, a joy to watch. And to be still doing it at this level and looking so calm in what is a fast furious, just so assured.”

Redknapp had forgotten that Silva did win the Champions League with Chelsea during their 2021 triumph. The Brazilian had been forced off in the first half of their 1-0 win over Manchester City in Porto due to injury, but still picked up a winners’ medal and was a big part of the squad that got them to the final.

Tuchel was full of praise for the defender who turns 38 next month after the win at Goodison Park. “I’ve never worked with a player in general that age,” Tuchel told reporters. “He’s the fittest one I have ever trained in that age. Thiago is a key, key player in the middle of the defence right now.

On an eventful day for the Brazilian centre-back, he also missed the team flight back after the win on Merseyside after he was picked for doping testing. Silva posted on Instagram that due to the random test he was unable to make the flight back to London and was forced to take a three-and-a-half-hour drive back to the capital instead.

Silva has revealed that the new-look Chelsea back three don’t communicate in English to each other on the pitch, as Koulibaly does not yet speak the language. “Normally we speak in French,” Silva said after Chelsea’s pre-season win over Udinese. “Because Edou[ard Mendy] does too, and Azpi, it worked well. The communication is not a problem, we can speak many different languages together.

“He [Koulibaly] is a player with a lot of experience. He played in Italian football, which for me is the best defensive schooling you can possibly receive. He is ready for our ideas.”

Anthony Joshua told secret Oleksandr Usyk chink that ‘nobody talks about’ ahead of fight

Tony Bellew’s former coach Dave Coldwell has revealed Oleksandr Usyk’s main weakness that ‘nobody talks about’. The renowned trainer believes that the Ukrainian is vulnerable to the body and has urged Anthony Joshua to target it more in the rematch on August 20.

Usyk has been hurt by body shots during his amateur career before. In 2011, he was dropped by a hook to the liver from now WBC, IBF, and WBO light-heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev. Then two years later in a World Series of Boxing bout, a straight right to the solar plex from three-time amateur gold-medallist Magomedrasul Majidov sent Usyk to the canvas again.

In an interview with talkSPORT, Coldwell – who cornered Bellew against Usyk in 2018 – detailed the strengths and weaknesses of the former undisputed cruiserweight champion.

He said: “I spent hours and hours watching him. The majority of his career, everyone’s come at him – that’s what he’s used to; he’s comfortable with that and that’s what his style’s built for. If Bellew went at him, we’d walk into traps. It’s different to AJ, because he’s got the height, the reach, the physicality; the one-punch danger.

“I came across the Michael Hunter fight. It was the first [Usyk] fight I thought, ‘He can be outboxed’ because the first few rounds Hunter was in a negative style that gave him a lot of difficulty. It can’t just be negative, because mentally Usyk will tire you out, so you’ve still got to put a thumbprint on him as well. So, I almost wanted to mirror what Usyk does to his opponents.

“Bellew’s very, very disciplined, so I knew he was capable, and I also wanted him to land body shots, because I came across something in the amateurs, which nobody talks about – Usyk went down with a body shot. When I saw that I thought, ‘There’s the chink’. But he’s very good with his defence, so if you just try and bludgeon him he knows how to cover.

“Marco Huck; Mairis Briedis; these good fighters couldn’t get to grips with him. Bellew’s smart, and hits hard enough to drain you at the same time. The game plan was to set traps for Usyk, because he’s more comfortable going backwards.

“With AJ it’s different, because of his physical attributes. If he catches you he’s going to at least knock you off-balance and wear you down – if he uses those physical attributes, which he didn’t really do in that first fight.”

Joshua will be looking to become a three-time world heavyweight champion later this month as he battles Usyk for a second time at the King Abdullah Sport City in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Coming into the bout he is expected to adopt a more aggressive approach under new trainer Robert Garcia with bodywork believed to be among their target areas.

Alexander Zverev makes touching statement as tennis star reveals he has lifelong condition

Tennis star Alexander Zverev has revealed he suffers from diabetes. The German, 25, who is currently sidelined with an ankle injury sustained at the French Open in June, revealed his condition by announcing the launch of his foundation for diabetics.

He took to Instagram to explain the reasons for its creation before revealing when he was diagnosed with the condition. “The 6th of August 2022 is a very special day for my family and I,” he began. “Today, the Alexander Zverev Foundation has officially come to life, supporting children with type 1 diabetes and helping people prevent type 2 diabetes by living a healthy and active life.

“Our mission is to provide insulin and life saving medicine to children in developing countries and those in need. And as a type 1 diabetic myself, I want to encourage children with diabetes to never give up on their dreams no matter what others might say to you. The only limit is the one you set yourself.”

The Olympic champion is grateful for the privileges bestowed upon him through being an elite tennis player and wants to use his platform to help give back. “I’m in the privileged situation of leading a life that I’ve always wanted to lead,” he said.

“I always wanted to play tennis, travel to tournaments around the world and be one of the best tennis players in the world. I owe everything to my parents and my brother, who have always supported me unconditionally on my way there and still do today.”

When Zverev last appeared on a tennis court, the German tore several ankle ligaments during his French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal. The tennis star is making encouraging progress after undergoing ankle surgery but his return date is currently unclear.

“We haven’t decided on an exact date for my return yet,” Zverev told Eurosport Deutschland. “I want to win every tournament I play. That’s my character, I don’t go to events just to play. That’s why I will play when I feel: ‘I can win this tournament’.”

It has been a difficult period for the world number two, who was embroiled in a tight scrap with the Spaniard in the French capital before disaster struck. Zverev went on to explain his recovery process which will enable him to be back firing on all cylinders sooner rather than later.

“The days are very long,” Zverev said. “You start very early and finish in the evening. We do a lot of exercises, there are always new ones that are added permanently. The foot is treated, mobility is worked out, strength and stability are rebuilt.

“In some cases, normal walking and running are re-learned. I do sprint exercises in the water, training sessions on the treadmill and bicycle.” It is unlikely Zverev will feature at this year’s US Open, where he registered his best grand slam performance by reaching the final in 2020.

Sport PLAYER RATINGS: Kalidou Koulibaly and James Tarkowski impress on debut as Chelsea beat Everton 1-0
