Michael Ballack pays tribute to son Emilio one year on from 18-year-old’s tragic accidental death

Former Germany and Chelsea legend Michael Ballack has paid tribute to his son Emilio one year on from the tragic quad bike crash which killed the 18-year-old in Portugal.

Emilio was on a family holiday in Troia, just south of Lisbon, when his bike tipped backwards and crushed him last August.

The 45-year-old player turned pundit has remembered his son with an image of Emilio, and a short poem about recalling his impact on their family.

Ballack posted on Instagram: ‘My lovable angel, I remember your laugh, happiness and joy..

‘I remember your Light .. with a lots of love , and a lots of emotions, i will pray today for your soul to Rest In Peace ..

‘I will also pray for your brothers With all my Love .. I hold your tight near my heart.’

Emilio, born in 2002, was Ballack’s middle son, with eldest child Louis born in 2001 and youngest Jordi born in 2005.

Sportsmail reported on the tragic accident last year, with the police revealing the incident happened on uneven ground close to the German footballer’s holiday home around 2am.

His was the only vehicle involved in the incident, which did not take place on a public road, and it was his grandmother who raised the alarm.

Firefighters fought to free Emilio from the wreckage, but medics were unable to save him at the scene.

Ballack married Simone Lambe, the mother of his three children, in 2008, but they divorced four years later.

The midfielder, who retired from the game in 2012, has been hailed as one of the greatest German footballers of all time, earning 98 national caps, and winning the Bundesliga three times.

He also spent four years at Stamford Bridge from 2006 to 2010, making 167 appearances as he helped the Blues to Premier League and FA Cup glory.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang picks between Chelsea and Man Utd after opening ‘£23m bid’

Pierre-Emerick Aubamyang wants to join Chelsea over Manchester United due to the fact there is Champions League football on offer at Stamford Bridge, according to reports. The Blues are now said to have made their opening proposal for the frontman as Thomas Tuchel targets a reunion with his former Borussia Dortmund striker in west London.

Aubameyang only joined Barcelona in January when his Arsenal contract was mutually terminated on transfer deadline day.

Yet the signing of Robert Lewandowski has hindered his prospects of playing regularly – even though Xavi is still very much a fan of Aubameyang.

Lewandowski started up top in the 0-0 draw with Rayo Vallecano on the opening day of 2022/23 La Liga campaign.

Now Aubameyang could look to pursue a swift return to the Premier League, where he is wanted by both Chelsea and Manchester United.

According to Barca insider Gerard Romero, Chelsea have now submitted an opening offer believed to be worth around £23m (€27m).

Barcelona are reportedly looking for around £25m – meaning the bid is likely to fall under serious consideration.

Fabrizio Romano is also adamant Aubameyang only wants to join Chelsea, tweeting: “No negotiations between Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Man United as things stand. It was ruled out days ago, Pierre is focused on Chelsea bid as he wants UCL football. New direct contacts on Thursday to discuss personal terms conditions.”

A sale would help the Catalan giants in their pursuit of financial security after a whirlwind summer that has caused numerous problems behind the scenes.

Club chiefs have spent the past month haggling salary reductions with a whole host of senior players just so Barca can register new signings Raphinha, Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie.

Aubameyang hit 68 Premier League goals in 128 outings during a four-year spell in north London.

He also scored up to 70 goals during his time playing under Tuchel in Germany with Dortmund.

Despite a fractured relationship with Mikel Arteta, Aubameyang never had any problems with Tuchel during their time working together.

Chelsea boss Tuchel has already publicly made his admiration for the player clear ahead of a potential transfer deal.

“This is totally separate from anything that is happening now, but I enjoyed a lot working with Auba while I was at Dortmund,” said Tuchel.

“Some players stay your players because you were very, very close. And Auba is one of those players.

“There was always straight away this close bond. They always stay your players in a way.”

He also clarified he never encounter problems with Aubameyang’s temperament, adding: “I experienced no issues with him, but this has nothing to do with the situation in Arsenal, about which I will also not comment out of respect. In Dortmund there was never an issue.”

Man Utd getting help from two players on Casemiro transfer as Real Madrid ponder sale

Manchester United are getting inadvertent help from two Real Madrid players as they look to sign Casemiro, according to reports. Erik ten Hag remains hopeful of landing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona. Yet with that deal difficult to strike, the Red Devils are now looking at alternatives.

Manchester United have, so far this summer, been unable to land a new midfielder.

De Jong has long been their priority, with the club spending three months pursuing the Netherlands international, but despite an agreement with Barcelona that deal looks off the table for now.

United have walked away from signing Adrien Rabiot, with the France international’s excessive wage demands deemed too high.

So they’ve now set their sights on serial winner Casemiro, who has won every major trophy multiple times throughout his glittering spell at Real Madrid.

Reports have suggested they’re ready to offer the midfielder a lengthy contract, as well as a huge salary to lure him to Old Trafford.

Man Utd transfers: Man Utd have a De Jong swap deal that can change everything

And The National has claimed United are getting some inadvertent assistance from Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni.

Real Madrid have long had no intention of selling Casemiro, even though the Brazil international is now starting to enter the twilight years of his career.

But they accept their side is ‘entering a new phase’ with both Camavinga and Tchouameni ‘seen as the future in Casemiro’s midfield position’.

That means they may now be inclined to accept United’s offer, though the player himself will ultimately have the final say.

The Red Devils can throw money at Casemiro to bring him in but, for a player who already earns the big bucks at the Bernabeu, it’ll be interesting to see if he’s tempted.

DON’T MISSBruno Fernandes has approved Frenkie de Jong alternativeWhen Chelsea will bid for Man Utd target Frenkie de JongMan Utd should have sold these five players already

Should a move end up materialising, however, the 30-year-old will become the seventh player to transfer between the two clubs since the turn of the millennium.

In the 2000s, David Beckham, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Gabriel Heinze and Cristiano Ronaldo all left Manchester for Madrid.

United landed Angel Di Maria from the La Liga titans back in the summer transfer window of 2014, shortly after the appointment of Louis van Gaal as manager.

Javier Hernandez left Old Trafford for the Bernabeu on loan in 2014, having been seemed surplus to requirements by Van Gaal.

Despite not always being a regular in the side, he still managed an impressive 18 goal involvements from 33 matches for Real.

And Raphael Varane was the latest to move between the two clubs, with the France international joining United last year after a deal was approved by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The report also delves into Casemiro’s character, too.

The Brazil international is said to be ‘obsessed by tactics and self-improvement’ and uses Wyscout to analyse his performances ‘in detail’.

Casemiro reportedly studied Kylian Mbappe ahead of a Champions League clash with PSG earlier in the year and sussed the France international out as a result.

He’s said to regularly talk with Carlo Ancelotti about tactics, with their wives watching matches together.

And a friend of the player recently claimed the Samba star was already a coach.

“Case is already a coach,” they were quoted as saying by El Paid.

“Ancelotti sees the Brazilian as the type of footballer he was, with great effort for the team accompanied by technical quality.”

As well as Casemiro, United also want to sign a new forward before the transfer window shuts.

Joao Felix has been linked but Atletico Madrid, it seems, have no plans to offload the striker this summer.

Anthony Joshua questions Oleksandr Usyk punching power with weight gain warning

Anthony Joshua believes Oleksandr Usyk’s added timber won’t help him punch harder and has sent the Ukrainian a stern warning that “punchers aren’t made, they’re born.” In the lead-up to fight night, a lot has been made about Usyk’s increase in size and there have been various conflicting reports.

On one end of the scale, you have Amir Khan, who claims ‘The Cat’ has gained 33lb (15kg), while on the other hand, you have Usyk’s promoter Alexander Krassyuk who is confident he is not outside of his normal weight. The consensus opinion among pundits is that Usyk will have added roughly 15lb (7kg) to his frame, but ‘AJ’ isn’t particularly concerned.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Joshua gave his thoughts on Usyk’s added muscle mass, saying: “Yeah, definitely, yeah [Usyk is bigger]. But bulking up it’s probably to help you absorb more punishment sometimes.

“If you’re a puncher, punchers aren’t made, they’re born, well that’s what they say in boxing so lifting weights and all that sort of stuff doesn’t make you a stronger puncher, but it may help you absorb more punishment. But I can’t speak on what his game plan is or why he’s done it, they know why, and I want it to work for him because I want a good fight, I want to put on a good show. So, I want it to work for him.”

Carl Froch made similar comments when he discussed Usyk’s weight gain in relation to power in an interview with Express Sport.

“Possibly he might be thinking that if ‘I put some weight on that my punch is going to have a little bit more impact’ but it’s the fast punches that hurt more and the timing of the punch because it’s not always the weight,” Froch told Express Sport.

He continued: “Obviously there’s more weight behind the punch but an actual hard punch doesn’t come from having bigger biceps or bigger lats or whatever. Usyk knows this, he’s not stupid, he’s a master. He’s got an honorary degree and how many masters in boxing.”

With Joshua looking to adopt a more aggressive approach under new coach Robert Garcia, Usyk has likely put on the size to help him hold his own during inside exchanges. All of the noise coming out of his camp suggests that he is preparing for the potential of being drawn into a toe-to-toe tear-up by engaging in brutal gym wars with his far larger sparring partners

Rafael Nadal has chance to overtake Roger Federer again at US Open despite Cincinnati loss

Rafael Nadal will have another opportunity to surpass a record set by Roger Federer at the US Open despite his early exit in Cincinnati. The Spaniard made his return after a month on the sidelines due to an abdominal injury sustained at Wimbledon.

If the 36-year-old won the title in Ohio and Daniill Medvedev were to lose his match to Denis Shapovalov tonight, he would have returned to the summit of men’s tennis for the first time since February 2020. But Borna Coric had other ideas as he produced an exceptional display to defeat the tennis legend 7-6(9), 4-6, 6-3.

Nadal will stay ranked number three for the time being but the number one spot will be up for grabs once again at the final Grand Slam in New York later this month. Federer is currently the oldest No 1 in the ATP Tour history having held the ranking at 36 years and 10 months old. It’s been 928 days since Nadal last held the top spot and by adding that on to current gap and it becomes a little over 14 years. Therefore, he’s just shy if he becomes No 1 now of overtaking Federer for biggest gap between first and last time he was No 1.

Furthermore, with the 22-time Grand Slam champion only recently turning 36, he would need to hold the No 1 spot past April next year to take the record away from Federer as the oldest No 1 in history. Nadal already became the first person to surpass the Swiss maestro’s Grand Slam tally of 20 after winning the Australian Open earlier this year.

He will have the opportunity to equal Serena Williams’s major haul of 23 when he contests this year’s US Open. His lack of matches before entering the tournament may prove to be a slight concern, but he is relishing the chance to compete at Flushing Meadows for the first time since 2019.

Of his performance, Nadal said: “Obviously I didn’t play my best match. [It is] something that can happen. Historically this tournament has been difficult for me. So coming back from a tough period of time, [it is] something that’s easy to accept and easy to say congrats to Borna, that he played better.

“It’s difficult to take a lot of positive things, but I need to improve. I need days [on the court], and that’s the truth.” Coric secured his biggest win since returning from shoulder surgery in March and became just the second active player along with Novak Djokovic to have a winning record against Nadal after playing him more than four times.

Man Utd fan group lay out ownership demands as Glazer family finally consider selling up

The Manchester United Supporters’ Trust (MUST) have laid out their demands to prospective new owners following reports that the club could soon change hands. United’s current owners, the Glazers, are understood to be considering a full sale of the club as opposition to their regime continues to grow.

The Americans have held all the power at Old Trafford ever since purchasing the club back in 2005, but after 17 controversial years, that could all be about to change. As the Red Devils continue to find themselves embroiled in crisis, on Wednesday, reports emerged suggesting the Glazers were looking to sell a minority stake in the club.

It has since been claimed they may even seek a full sale instead. The investors have been the subject of intense criticism in recent years with fans having publicly protested and called for the Americans to walk away following years of failure in the wake of Sir Alex Ferguson’s 2013 retirement.

Amid reports of a potential sale of United in the near future, MUST have now issued a statement outlining their expectations for prospective new owners. Their demands include new investors being “committed to the culture, ethos and best traditions” at Old Trafford, investing to “restore United to former glories” and ensuring supporters are “embedded” within the running of the club.

In full, the MUST statement read: “Speculation is mounting about a potential change of ownership or new investors at Manchester United. Whilst supporters have called for change, of course this has to be the right change.

“Any prospective new owner or investor has to be committed to the culture, ethos and best traditions of the club. They have to be willing to invest to restore United to former glories, and that investment must be real new money spent on the playing side and the stadium.

“Finally, any new ownership structure must embed supporters, including a degree of fan share ownership, in their operating model. These are the criteria supporters will judge any bid on. We are open to dialogue with any bidder, and look forward to any such discussions.”

United currently find themselves bottom of the Premier League two games into the new season having suffered humiliating defeats to both Brighton and Brentford.

The appointment of Erik ten Hag at the start of the summer was supposed to inspire a significant shift at the club, however United remain in disarray both on and off the pitch. The club’s ongoing woes have been compounded by a failure to attract players in the summer transfer market.

A vision of United’s future? Sir Jim Ratcliffe outlines how he would run the Red Devils

Sir Jim Ratcliffe may have already hinted at what Man United fans could expect if he takes over the club, having outlined how he would run a football club when he attempted to buy Chelsea earlier this year.

On Wednesday, a spokesperson speaking on behalf of the billionaire Ineos owner, outlined that the English businessman views himself as a ‘potential buyer’ of the Red Devils.

It came after Sportsmail revealed the club’s current American owners, the Glazer family, were considering selling a minority stake in Man United and that they had held preliminary discussions about the possibility of bringing in a new investor.

And United fans have already been given an insight into how Ratcliffe would operate the club, when he insisted he would not view the club as a ‘financial asset’.

Ratcliffe said: ‘No, we’re not interested in making money out of Chelsea. Can we run that club really, really well and turn it into one of the finest clubs in Europe? That’s our ambition with Chelsea.

‘We make lots of money in chemicals, we don’t need to make money out of (Chelsea). We don’t think of it as a financial asset.’

Ratcliffe, who has an estimated net worth of £12bn, wants to purchase the club outright, having recently failed with a bid to buy Chelsea, while US private equity firm Apollo have entered exclusive talks to acquire a minority share in the club.

Ratcliffe already has experience at the helm of a top football club, with Team Ineos completing their €100million (£85million) takeover of Ligue 1 club OGC Nice in 2019.

The French side have had steady progress under Ratcliffe’s ownership, with last season’s fifth place finish being their highest placement in the league since 2017.

The English businessman also proved he has an eye for talent having secured the services of manager Christophe Galtier, just a year before the Frenchman was snapped up by league champions PSG.

The 69-year-old tried to purchase Chelsea earlier this year but saw his late bid turned down as current owner Todd Boehly and his consortium took ownership of the London club.

Ratcliffe tabled a last-minute £4.25billion offer to purchase the Stamford Bridge side in May but now aims to become Manchester United owner after registering his interest.

The current ownership model at the club sees the majority of control lie with the Glazer family, with Avram and Joel Glazer the main representatives.

They purchased in the club in 2005, and despite coming in for swathes of criticism since their takeover, have recently felt the growing discontent increase after being publicly slammed by supporters, pundits, and former players with the club in disarray after years of poor management and recruitment.

While they do not plan to walk away entirely, the Glazers are prepared to sell minority shares at Old Trafford and, as revealed by Sportsmail, have entered exclusive talks with US private equity firm Apollo.

It is understood Apollo may bring in other investors as part of any deal, however the consortium is not likely to include bidders who missed out on the recent sale of Chelsea, such as Ratcliffe.
