Roy Keane has set Erling Haaland a new target this season after he scored two goals on his Premier League debut for Manchester City against West Ham. The Norwegian got both goals as Pep Guardiola’s side claimed a 2-0 win at the London Stadium to begin the new season on a strong note.

Sky Sports pundits Keane and Micah Richards were discussing how many goals the 22-year-old could score with the City midfield supplying him, and the former Manchester United midfielder claimed that with penalties he could reach new heights after he got his first City goal from 12 yards.

“Very comfortable for City,” Keane said. “Haaland, people doubted whether he could settle in the Premier League quickly, great quality, great run, he’s going to get chances. We’ve seen it today people talking 20-odd goals, he’s taking penalties it’ll be 30, 40 goals. He is going to get chances if he stays fit and healthy with the players around him. Good luck to the defenders coming up against him.”

After Keane tipped Haaland to get over 30 league goals, ex-City defender Richards said that with a strong supply line behind him the forward will score plenty of goals. “I think with the creativity behind him, De Bruyne getting the assists today it’s just brilliant,” Richards said. “Yes his hold up play will improve but that movement in the final third was expectational. He will score 20, 25+ goals on that evidence today.”

Haaland’s father Alf-Inge was at the London Stadium to watch his son’s debut, and his own playing career was ended due to injury caused by Keane’s tackle on the former City man in 2001. The Irishman was sent off for a poor challenge, suspended for eight games and fined £200,000.

Richards joked that he had “never seen Roy so nervous” when the broadcast mentioned that Alf-Inge Haaland was also in the stadium, and told Keane that Haaland senior was waiting for him after the game.

Keane was full of praise for the former Borussia Dortmund man. “For the movement, for such a player, he’s 22 you get that when you’re more older, more mature but at such a young age it’s football intelligence,” Keane added. “We never thought he’d miss the penalty and the second goal he got.

“That little movement, the darting runs, he’s like [Cristiano] Ronaldo. Doesn’t want to get too involved but when he’s in the box he comes alive and I think he’ll be disappointed with that chance that he didn’t hit the target.”

Haaland was told off for swearing during his post-match interview where he claimed he should have scored more than twice on Sunday. “If you saw the Gundo [chance] right before I went off I should’ve been there so it was a bit s*** but that’s how it is,” Haaland was then interrupted by Sky Sports to apologise for his language. “S*** sorry. Not good language in this country.”

Gary Neville has blasted Manchester United chiefs for their transfer inactivity this summer, and branded their treatment of the current squad as “abuse” by not recruiting more players. Erik ten Hag has seen Christian Eriksen, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia join him at Old Trafford this summer, but Neville believes more work needs to be done after the Red Devils’ 2-1 defeat to Brighton in their first Premier League game of the season.

“I am certainly not going to have a go at the coach,” Neville told Sky Sports. “He needs time, lots of time. I have actually got to the point where I am not even going to have a go at the players anymore because if you have got a business and the people who are actually working in that business can’t do the job for you, then you remove them from those jobs.

“It’s actually abuse to keep them doing those jobs for longer because to be fair they don’t enjoy it either. The reality of it is that those players either need replacing or supporting.

“They knew six months ago, eight months ago, 12 months ago that there needed to be investment this summer. All those players who were leaving like [Juan] Mata, [Nemanja] Matic and other ones that left, they knew they had a problem with [Anthony] Martial not being someone who has been fancied in the past.

“Cristiano [Ronaldo] coming to the end, [Edinson] Cavani leaving, obviously the situation with [Mason] Greenwood not being at the club anymore, these things have been known for a long time so it’s not as if it has just hit them now.”

Neville was also asked what his thoughts were on United’s reported pursuit of former Stoke forward Marko Arnautovic. “I don’t know,” a stunned Neville said. “I have no comment on it. I have got a comment on everything in the world apart from Manchester United signing Marko Arnautovic today, I have got nothing to say.

“You have got to be concerned about every element of the recruitment, the reliance on the Dutch league means that the recruitment of the 50-60 people they have got working in that department is not being trusted by the manager, because he wants to go with the players he knows from Holland.”

“Holland has not always been the most precise market for the Premier League, there have been good players coming from Holland but it has not been the market that has the biggest hit rate.

“So I am concerned about that, but generally in this moment in time there is a little bit of despair just through the fact that the coach, who is an outstanding coach, has not been given the tools that he needs at the start of the season so he can start the season with a new, revitalised squad.”

Lewis Hamilton has said Mercedes “can’t forever rely” on hardiness being their biggest strength as part of a plea to improve performance. The Silver Arrows are not quite in Formula 1’s title fight this season, but they’ve been consistent in finishing races and recorded just one retirement from 26 combined race starts thus far.

George Russell was involved in an early crash at the British Grand Prix, while team-mate Hamilton has finished all 13 races on the calendar to date. That being said, results have been sub-par after Mercedes experienced setbacks adjusting to the new F1 regulations.

Almost all manufacturers have endured difficulties with ground effect and ‘porpoising’ this season, but Mercedes’ struggles have been among the worst. Red Bull and Ferrari have looked streaks ahead of their other ‘Big Three’ rival at times, leading Hamilton to suggest it’s the engineers’ jobs to turn the tide.

“It’s been a really challenging year,” the 37-year-old told ViaPlay. “I would say similar to the year we had in 2009 with the car that we arrived in the factory in February and they said the car was looking good and then we got to the first test and we were like ‘woah’.

“As a team we’ve gone through a similar process of trying to strip away some things, rebuild, regroup and maneovre this car into a better place and we’ve had some really nice consistency in these last few races which has been great.

“We’re still lacking performance which is the difficult thing because I think there’s potential in this car but we’ve had to depower it to stop it from bouncing but we’ve had really good reliability. We can’t forever rely on reliability being the thing that keeps us on the podium so we really need performance.”

It’s perhaps too late to revive a title fight given fourth-placed Russell is already 100 points off leader Max Verstappen. Hamilton, meanwhile, is another 12 points off the leading pace in sixth.

But the Silver Arrows are enjoying a purple patch at present, with Hamilton in particular improving after five straight podium finishes. The seven-time world champion grew so accustomed to Mercedes leading the pack performance-wise, but F1’s current structure firmly favours their opponents for the time being.

In front of the famous Old Joe clocktower, it was finally England’s time.

The country’s hockey teams had never before won Commonwealth Games gold. But at the home of Birmingham’s iconic 100-metre landmark, the women stood tall.

A week on from the Lionesses’ win over Germany at Wembley, here was an England team again making history – and by the same 2-1 scoreline.

As the seconds ticked down of this final against Australia, a chant of ‘Hockey’s coming home’ rang round the University of Birmingham.

Then, when the whistle went, the victorious players threw their sticks in the air and danced in front of 6,000 fans to Spandau Ballet’s ‘Gold’.

The jubilant scenes evoked memories of that glorious day in Rio six years ago, when Great Britain beat the Netherlands to secure their first Olympic title.

This final, though, was nowhere near as nervy as that 2016 shootout which delayed the 10 o’clock news. It was also extra special because it came at home.

Five of England’s squad are graduates from this very university, including opening goalscorer Holly Hunt and Flora Peel, who laid on the first and set up Tess Howard’s second. Lily Walker is still a student here.

Together, this young team gave four-time champions Australia an education to claim one of the most celebrated golds of these great Games.

‘This has never been achieved by an England hockey side before, so it’s just so special,’ beamed captain Hollie Pearne-Webb, one of six players from that Olympic-winning team.

‘Rio was the first time we had won that one as well, so there’s similarities. But what’s different is that we did this in front of a home crowd and that’s unbelievable.

‘I hope this can give hockey and women’s sport a boost. We saw what the Lionesses did and they were hugely inspirational for us.

‘We had a video message from Leah Williamson this morning which was amazing. And then we also had a message from Gary, Phil and Tracey Neville, which was incredible.’

Tracey, of course, led England’s netball team to their first Commonwealth gold on the Gold Coast four years ago. And yesterday had been set up to be a super Sunday for women’s sport, with the hockey, cricket and netball finals one after another.

England’s cricketers and netballers, though, lost their semi-finals on Saturday – as well as their bronze medal matches yesterday – meaning the only hope of home glory was the hockey team on Sunday afternoon.

However, if Pearne-Webb’s side were feeling any extra pressure, they did not show it against a side they have lost to in two previous Commonwealth finals.

England struck twice in the second quarter, the first coming from a sweet strike from Hunt, who celebrated by leaping almost as high as the world’s tallest clocktower in front of her.

‘I didn’t know how to celebrate, so I just jumped on the spot,’ grinned the 25-year-old. ‘This is my old university pitch so to be back out there playing in a Commonwealth final and getting a gold medal is absolutely surreal.

‘There are girls in our squad who have been around for years and not even been in a final let alone won a gold medal so I almost feel like I’ve cheated the system a bit. It is ridiculous.’

England doubled their advantage four minutes later when Peel – a descendent of 19th-century prime minister Robert Peel – fired towards goal and Howard diverted the ball into the roof of the net.

It was a magnificent moment for the 23-year-old, who ruptured her ACL just weeks before last summer’s Olympics in Tokyo, when Team GB went on to win bronze.

‘To miss out on last summer was devastating but it gave me a lot of time to realise how much I want this,’ said Howard. ‘This gold medal was always the dream for me in rehab.’

And it was never really in doubt from the moment she scored, with Anna Toman also hitting the post for England in the third quarter. Australia scored a consolation through Ambrosia Malone with 19 seconds to go. But the ‘Coming home’ chants had already started.

‘I laughed when I heard that,’ added Peel. ‘I was getting ready to celebrate and then the goal went in and I thought, “Oh no, have they just jinxed it?”. But thankfully it has just come home.’

Laura Muir stormed to 1500m gold at the Commonwealth Games to collect her second medal in 24 hours.

The Scot decimated the field at the Alexander Stadium to win on the final day of the athletics.

Muir won 800m bronze on Saturday – after an appeal over the photo finish from Jamaica was rejected – to claim her first ever Commonwealth Games medal.

Just a day later she claimed victory in four minutes 02.75 seconds ahead of Northern Ireland’s Ciara Mageean and Australia’s Abbey Caldwell.

Muir success comes after years of heartbreak. She missed the Gold Coast Games in 2018 to take her veterinary exams and finished 11th in the 2014 Glasgow Games after taking a tumble.

When asked about how that experience helped her. Muir told BBC Sport: ‘You learn from it and your time will come. It sounds cheesy but it’s true. Eight years of Commonwealths and it’s been bugging me so this means a lot.’

In the morning session, England’s Matt Hudson-Smith lost out on gold as Zambia’s Muzala Samukonga stunned the 400m favourite.

The 27-year-old – on his home track – had to settle for silver as Samukonga made a late break in the final 50m to go from fifth to first.

He ran 44.66 seconds, with British record holder Hudson-Smith crossing the line in 44.81 seconds.

He said: ‘I made a commitment to go hard in the first 200m. I tired up around the back. You live and you learn. You’ve just got to push on. I still got a silver medal.

‘If you asked people a year ago if I would do this (winning Commonwealth and World medals), I would have said no. It is going in the right direction but there is a lot of work to be done. Stoke the fire and got to keep pushing.

‘I’ve never heard of him (Samukonga). At least I took a bit out of him.’

Hudson-Smith at least adds to the bronze he won at the World Championships last month in Eugene.

Yet it continues his Commonwealth Games frustration after he was disqualified from the event in 2018 for running out of his lane.

Hudson-Smith will now look to defend the European title he won in 2018 when he runs in Munich later this month.

In the women’s race, Victoria Ohuruogu took silver with England team-mate Jodie Williams clinching bronze behind Barbados’ Sara Williams.

The women’s 4x100m relay squad of Asha Philip, Imani-Lara Lansiquot, Bianca Williams and Daryll Neita took silver behind Nigeria.

In the men’s race Jona Efoloko, Zharnel Hughes, Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake and Ojie Edoburun took gold, defending the title from 2018, in 38.35 seconds ahead of Trinidad and Tobago and Nigeria.

Earlier at the Alexander Stadium, Cindy Sember won bronze in the 100m hurdles with world champion and world record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria taking the title in a Games record of 12.30 seconds.

Things turned sour on and off the pitch as Manchester United lost to Brighton in their first Premier League game of the season as fans clashed in the stands.

Hope was high among United fans for the start of a new era under Erik ten Hag but they suffered a first ever home defeat to the Seagulls, who were deserved winners at Old Trafford with a 2-1 victory.

Pascal Gross scored twice in the first half to give Brighton a commanding lead and while an Alexis Mac Allister own goal reduced the deficit after the break, Ten Hag’s side could not complete the turnaround.

The result led to increased tensions in the stands and a fight appeared to break out in one area of the crowd at Old Trafford.

In one photograph, a man seems to have his hand around the throat of another spectator.

Fans from the section below then got involved as others attempted to diffuse the situation, while many simply looked on in horror.

Before the game, Ten Hag urged supporters to be the 12th man against Brighton.

‘If we bring commitment then I think they [the fans] will like it and they will bring the fight back,’ the Dutchman said. ‘The stadium I think is meant to bring fight and co-operation.’

It appears that some of those in attendance at Old Trafford took that call to action a little too seriously.
