Outlander’s Lauren Lyle explains reason she took on Karen Pirie role

Lauren Lyle is perhaps best known for portraying Marsali MacKimmie Fraser in the Starz series Outlander. However, the Scottish actress has taken on a new role a far cry away from the period drama. The 29-year-old is currently playing detective Karen Pirie in the ITV crime series – a role she was determined to land.

Karen Pirie is a three-part cold case murder series based on acclaimed author Val McDermid’s novel The Distant Echo which has been adapted for the screen by Emer Kenny.

Lauren’s character Karen is a fearless Scottish investigator with a sharp tongue and a tenacious desire for the truth.

She is tasked with leading an investigation into the death of barmaid Rosie Duff (played by Anna Russell-Martin) who was found brutally murdered in 1996.

Suspicion fell on the three drunken male students who were discovered at the scene of the crime, claiming to have found her body.

The case was reopened 25 years later when a journalist decided to make a podcast about the murder which is where Karen comes in.

Ahead of the series airing on ITV, Lauren opened up to Express.co.uk and other media about why she wanted to play the determined detective.

She explained: “I mean, it’s such an iconic thing to get to be like, an ITV British detective on screen – it is really iconic to get to do that.”

Lauren admitted she never thought she would get to play a detective in her twenties, claiming the opportunity does not arise very often.

When she was reading the script, she was eager to audition for the role of Karen as they were the same age and both Scottish.

Lauren exclaimed: “When I read the whole briefing script, I was like, ‘Oh, my God, I could actually get this and I think I might be quite good at it.'”

“And, like the writing so funny, it’s so relatable,” she added. “And having Val’s backbone of a story, and then to be brought forward to all the themes that we deal with today through humour was really special.”

Each episode of the drama is two hours long and the story jumps between the past and the present as Karen tries to crack the case with her team.

Karen leads the investigation with Sex Education star Chris Jenks who plays her subordinate colleague Jason ‘The Mint’ Murray.

But as the opening episode unfolds, someone appears to be willing to risk everything to keep the secrets surrounding the case hidden.

Lauren also addressed Karen’s “odd” personality at the press conference about the show.

“I mean, she’s really odd,” Lauren quipped. “It’s just odd as she marches around and doesn’t think before she speaks.”

However, Lauren also described Karen as “smart” and “determined” as well as “hopeful”.

She explained: “I think a lot of the detectives on-screen are quite often like down and out guys or girls, or women who have something else really difficult going on.”

Lauren said Karen is a detective ITV viewers have not seen before, adding: “I can’t name you any other mid-twenties female detective on screen.”

Strictly’s Fleur East cried after her performance thinking about her late father

Fleur East has revealed she cried after her performance on Saturday’s show thinking about her beloved father Malcolm who sadly passed away in 2020.

Following her Viennese Waltz with partner Vito Coppola, the singer, 34, could be seen wiping away tears, telling host Claudia Winkleman the tough rehearsals were to blame.

However speaking on her Hits Radio show on Monday she admitted her uncle thoughtfully wore her late father’s bracelet to the show, which left her ‘blubbering’.

She said: ‘All day I was trying to make sure I found the right emotion for this dance as I was really worried about going on there, being quite blank and empty and just doing the steps. I really wanted to commit to it’.

‘But just before we danced, I went to see my family who were sitting in the audience and my Uncle Sean lifted his arm to show me his wrist – and he was wearing my Dad’s bracelet’.

She continued: ‘He didn’t even say anything to me, just showed it to me and that set me off. It was just seconds before I performed and with everything else and just being nervous, I started crying, blubbering!’

It comes after Fleur said her cousin went to see a psychic medium and they delivered a tear-jerking good luck message from her dad, who passed away after suffering a heart attack.

Speaking on her Hits Radio Breakfast Show last week, Fleur played a voice note from her cousin in which the medium revealed she’s communicating with ‘a spirit called Malcolm’ who has a daughter that ‘sings or dances’.

The psychic went on to say: ‘[Malcolm’s] daughter is about to start something, she’s about to start an adventure, as he’s calling it. He says to tell her I’m so proud of her and give her all the luck in the world.’

The singer explained: ‘In 72 hours I’ll be dancing live for the first time and it’s really exciting but something really weird has happened to me ahead of the Strictly weekend.

‘On Sunday I had a message from one of my cousins who had been to see a medium – people that speak to the spirit world.

‘I’ve never gone to a medium because I do believe in it and I’m quite scared about going because I never wanted to test it. But my cousin went and this happened.

‘So my Dad passed away in 2020, his name was Malcolm and apparently he came through and wished me good luck ahead of Strictly.’

Fleur described receiving the message as an ‘eerie but comforting’ experience because she has been ‘so anxious’ about not having her beloved late father around for such a big moment in her life.

She added: ‘Is that not really weird? It’s eerie but it’s really comforting as well.

‘Leading up to Strictly has been so nerve-racking and I’ve been so anxious and not having my Dad here for the first time before something so big in my life is huge.

‘So to get a message like that is the set up I needed before the big weekend.’

Fleur previously admitted she chose to take part in this year’s Strictly Come Dancing in honour of her late father, who was a huge fan of the BBC One competition.

She said: ‘I hope I get to dance to some of my songs. For me, it’s quite emotional. My dad who passed away in 2020, Strictly was his favourite show. I’m going to be doing it for him.

Natasha Poly puts on a VERY leggy display while Coco Rocha dons latex at a bash PFW

Natasha Poly put on a very leggy display as she hit the red carpet alongside fellow supermodel Coco Rocha at the Kilian Paris bash during Paris Fashion Week on Monday.

The Russian beauty, 37, slipped into a microscopic black mini dress for the event which featured an intricate halterneck detail.

Natasha completed the look with thigh-high boots and wore an oversized bomber jacket as she posed up a storm.

The mother-of-two sported a natural make-up look while her blonde tresses were slicked back behind both ears.

The evening celebrated the 15th anniversary of the perfume brand with a lavish party at the Hotel Plazza Athenee.

The label creates such scents as Creed, Frederic Malle, Serge Lutens, Le Labo, by Kilian, Maison Francis Kurkdjian or Byredo.

Coco, 34, turned heads donning a head to toe latex look for the evening with a dramatic palette of make-up and her hair in a wet look style.

The Canadian beauty commanded attention in the dramatic look that boasted a long coat which she layered over a figure hugging jumpsuit.

Coco added extra height to her frame with a pair of black boots that featured an almost gravity defying heal.

It comes after the star made sure to turn heads as she arrived at the Vivienne Westwood show in the city on Saturday.

The model later took her seat on the front row alongside singer Sandara Park as they got ready for the catwalk show.

Casey Donovan vows to lose 20kg with Jenny Craig so she can start a family

Singer Casey Donovan has committed to a weight-loss program which she hopes will mean she can one day have children.

The Australian Idol winner, 34, has already lost seven kilograms in one month thanks to Jenny Craig and plans to lose a total of 20kg.

She told The Daily Telegraph she wants to improve her physical and mental health before starting a family.

‘I would like to start a family one day. I need to get my head and body in the right frame of mind to do,’ she said.

The reality TV star enlisted the help of weight-loss gurus Jenny Craig to help bring her weight down from ‘scary’ levels.

Casey said the support of her girlfriend Renee Sharples, whom she has been dating since 2020, has helped her stay committed.

‘I’m just feeling healthy within my soul,’ she added.

The I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! star has spoken candidly about her weight in recent years.

Back in 2017, Casey revealed she had shed an incredible 23kgs in 15 weeks.

Sharing a before and after picture to Instagram, she said: ‘When motivation lacks, I look at how far I’ve come. I don’t want to go back to that girl in the white singlet.

‘It’s not an easy road, but the payoff is so rewarding. Just to feel better in health and be able to run a little longer each week makes me feel so much stronger.’

In an interview with The Daily Telegraph in 2020, Casey revealed she was focusing on healthy eating and maintaining a calorie deficit to shed the kilos.

‘My five a day would be broccolini, asparagus, sweet potato, onion (they’re a vegetable aren’t they?) and avocado,’ she said.
