Regarding symptoms, the main difference between IBS and SIBO is bloating. Although IBS also causes bloating, Dixon said: “With SIBO the bloating is higher up because it’s in the small intestine which is above the large intestine so the bloating is right under the ribs.”

In contrast, with IBS the bloating is further down due to the positioning of the large intestine.

On the bloating, Dixon added: “People tend to bloat very quickly after food, and it tends to be after carbohydrate rich foods.”

Other symptoms of SIBO include nausea and acid reflux, these symptoms can get worse if a patient is diagnosed with IBS instead of SIBO.

Since there could be thousands of patients who have been misdiagnosed with the wrong condition, Express.co.uk asked what the ramifications could be regarding potential complications of leaving SIBO untreated.

Dixon said untreated SIBO “can cause systemic issues because SIBO causes inflammation, the gut bacteria become imbalanced and when you’ve got inflammation in the gut, that disrupts the immune system in the gut which leads to inflammation so it can lead to joint disorders or neurological disorders”.

As a result, an untreated SIBO can affect overall health by reducing the strength of the immune system overall.

Fortunately, although SIBO is much less well known than other conditions, there are still treatments available on the NHS to help patients.

The most common of these is an anti-microbial known as rifaximin described by the NHS as a “promising, easily handled, and safe drug for the short-term treatment of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth” which can be prescribed by an NHS GP.

Other treatments include antibiotics, although Dixon warned that, while effective, they also “kill off healthy bacteria” in contrast to rifaximin which doesn’t.

Furthermore, there are also alternative ways to manage or treat SIBO including through dietary changes and the treatment of the underlying casue of the condition.

SIBO is tested for using a breath test. There are several types of SIBO and which type someone has will depend on the gas they emit when they breathe out.

In common with other conditions such as IBS, there are several risk factors for SIBO including:• Stress• Anxiety• Endometriosis• Crohn’s disease• A history of food poisoning• Chronic conditions.

On this, Dixon said: “You can eradicate SIBO, but it can relapse if you don’t address what caused it in the first place.

You need to be working on gut repair and calming any inflammation in the gut.”What this means is that SIBO can be treated, but to be fully eradicated the cause of the condition must be treated as well.

By doing this, patients can reduce the risk of a relapse and use of medication.

“I think lots of people don’t believe in SIBO,” said Dixon: “I think they think it’s a general bacterial overgrowth in the whole gut, I think it’s old-fashioned thinking in a way.”

Overall, then, Dixon’s opinion is that there isn’t enough awareness around SIBO, a condition which could be affecting thousands of patients around the UK.

SIBO, though not one of the most serious in the gamut of medicinal conditions globally, is nevertheless worthy of the attention of more according to experts in the field.

Through greater discussion of SIBO, the hope is that more patients will start asking for a test and start the journey towards a SIBO free life.

    Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours can also lead to a range of other conditions, as explained by the society.

    Too much gastrin causes a condition known as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, in which the stomach makes too much acid.

    This leads to stomach ulcers, which can cause pain, nausea, and loss of appetite. Severe ulcers can bleed.

    If the stomach acid reaches the small intestine, it can damage the cells of the intestinal lining and break down digestive enzymes before they have a chance to digest food causing diarrhoea and weight loss.

    Excess glucagon can raise blood sugar, sometimes leading to diabetes. This can cause symptoms such as feeling thirsty and hungry, and having to urinate often.

    The symptom that brings most people with glucagonomas to their doctor is a rash called necrolytic migratory erythema.

    This is a red rash with swelling and blisters that often travels from place to place on the skin.

    These tumours make a substance called vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). Too much VIP can lead to problems with diarrhoea. This may be mild at first, but gets worse over time. By the time they are diagnosed, most people have severe, watery diarrhoea.

    Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, muscle cramps, feeling weak or tired, and flushing (redness and warmth in the face or neck).

    People with these tumours also tend to have low levels of acid in their stomachs, which can lead to problems digesting food.

    It adds that “severe” gum disease can have a negative impact on your blood sugar control and increase your odds of experiencing other common long-term complications of diabetes.

    “The inflammation, which occurs in the gums, escapes into the bloodstream and upsets the body’s defence system which in turn affects blood sugar control,” it adds.

    “In other words, gum disease and diabetes are linked in both directions.”

    It is recommended that if you are diagnosed with diabetes you should request a comprehensive check-up with your dentist.

    The treatments available for hair loss include finasteride and minoxidil. But some research has seen improvements in hair loss using platelet injections.

    Platelets are rich in substances that promote growth and can be removed from a person’s blood and injected into problematic areas of the scalp.

    Remember, problems with your hair aren’t the only symptom of iron deficiency.

    It’s important to spot signs early because if it is left untreated, iron deficiency can lead to devastating complications including heart failure.

    As well as lethargy, the NHS recognises the following as the “most common” symptoms of anaemia:

    Headaches and tinnitus are also symptoms of vitamin deficiency.

    It’s also worth noting that an altered sense of taste, feeling itchy and a sore tongue could be symptoms.

    If you visit your GP, they will be able to diagnose the condition. They will do this through a blood test.

    At the end of the study, it was concluded that “daily lemon intake and walking are effective for high blood pressure because both showed significant negative correlation to systolic blood pressure”.

    Systolic blood pressure is the amount of force that the heart exerts on the walls of the arteries with each heartbeat.

    Too high blood pressure can put additional strain on your blood vessels, your heart, and other organs – leading to significant failures.

    Hypertension is said to kill approximately 10 million people per year worldwide, so reducing its effect is vital for longevity.

    Lemon is specifically a good source of vitamin C – an antioxidant that can reduce the effects of damaging free radicals.

    Ms Godfrey left other tips for longevity, including another tip to bump up the level of vital vitamins in your body.

    “Roll up your sleeves while you are walking and get a daily dose of Vitamin D every morning from the sun,” she said.

    “The UV rays from the sun are safest in the morning hours and studies tell us that the best time to absorb Vitamin D is around midday.”

    The study Ms Godfrey is referring to was published back in 2008 in the journal Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology. It found that going in the sun at nine o’clock seemed to have the least risk of causing skin cancer.

    “To keep your vitamin D levels topped up you can also compliment your morning walk with foods that will also support your Vitamin D levels,” Ms Godfrey added.

    The foods she recommended included mushrooms, egg yolk, oily fish such as salmon, sardines, herring, or beef liver.

    Vitamin D is shown to be a major factor in speeding up the ageing process.

    It’s worth noting that extreme temperatures, such as being too hot can make the effects of low blood pressure worse.

    Heart disease and high cholesterol are two often linked conditions that can be prevented or improved by diet. Having too much cholesterol means there is too much of a fatty substance called cholesterol in your blood. If not dealt with, this can block vessels and make you more at risk of issues such as heart disease and strokes.

    High cholesterol is usually caused by eating fatty food, not exercising enough, being overweight, smoking and drinking alcohol.

    It can also be genetic.

    However, according to various studies, one herb is particularly potent when it comes to improving your health.

    Researchers have found that coriander seeds could reduce cholesterol levels as well as your risk of heart disease.

    One paper, by a team from Sri Ramachandra University in India and published in Current Cardiology Reviews, proved the seeds could lower low-density lipoproteins (LDL) – also known as “bad” cholesterol – and fats called triglycerides.

    It said: “The seeds of coriander have a remarkable hypolipidemic action.

    “The levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides decreased significantly in the tissues of the animals of the experimental group which received coriander seeds.

    “The level of LDL and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol decreased while that of high density-lipoprotein (‘good’) cholesterol increased in the experimental group compared to the control group.”

    And another study, published in the Journal of Environmental Biology in 2008, fed coriander seeds to rats.

    “In the present study, coriander seeds incorporated into diet and the effect of the administration of coriander seeds on the metabolism of lipids was studied in rats, fed with high fat diet and added cholesterol,” it says.

    “The seeds had a significant hypolipidemic action. In the experimental group of rats (tissue) the level of total cholesterol and triglycerides increased significantly.”

    In 2009 a report published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology concluded the seeds – or fruit – of the herb could successfully lower blood pressure – or hypertension.

    High blood pressure can also raise the risk of heart problems.

    The paper says: “These results indicate that coriander fruit exhibits gut stimulatory, inhibitory and hypotensive effects mediating possibly through cholinergic, Ca(2+) antagonist and the combination of these mechanisms respectively.

    “Diuretic activity adds value to its use in hypertension.”

    As a general rule, a healthy level of total cholesterol in the blood is five or less millimoles per litre (mmol/l).

    More specifically a healthy level of high-density lipoprotein is one or more mmol/l.

    And you should have four or less mmol/l of low-density lipoprotein.

    To find out if your cholesterol levels are high your doctor will need to take a blood test.

    Having high cholesterol is often linked to a number of lifestyle factors, including diet and exercise.
