Wayne Pivac slammed a ‘cheap-shot’ that knocked out his Wales captain Justin Tipuric in the win against Georgia.
The flanker had to be taken off after a hefty swinging-arm hit from Beka Saghinadze saw him lying prone on the turf in the second-half at Parc y Scarlets.
To his credit referee Luke Pearce immediately stopped the game, and the flanker was later driven away on a motorised stretcher.
But Pivac was seriously unhappy with the tackle.
‘We are very disappointed with him leaving the field the way he did with what was pretty much a cheap shot,’ he said after the game.
‘It’s an incident that I think warranted more than a yellow card. It looked a nasty forearm to the face. It put paid to Justin for the rest of the match.’
Man of the match Aaron Wainwright said of the tackle: ‘it could have gone either way, red or yellow, I thought. It wasn’t the best of challenges I don’t think personally but Justin is alright and that’s the main thing.
‘I’ve checked on him and he’s feeling a lot better now.’
Tipuric will now have to go through the return-to-play concussion protocols after the blow – which will make him a doubt for the England game next week.
With Taulupe Faletau, Josh Navidi and Ross Moriarty missing this game with injury Pivac could have a blood the likes of inexperienced tyros Shane Lewis-Hughes and James Botham against England’s formidable back-row.
Moriarty, who has hurt his ankle, is unlikely to feature in the Autumn Nations Cup match next weekend, and Navidi is yet to complete contact drills, but Pivac believes Faletau will be fit.
‘Taulupe will be fine,’ he added.
‘He trained on Thursday after having the first part of the week off. He did some running. He’s on track to be available.
‘On Josh, we’ll wait and see. Hopefully he will be.’
The wild west-walian weather meant that Wales’ youthful backline, of which five starters were 25 and under, could not show their burgeoning talents.
But Callum Sheedy, who managed the conditions well, took eight points, Louis Rees-Zammit scored his first Welsh try on the left wing and Rhys Webb took another late on as the set-piece improved markedly against the Georgians who have not yet scored a point in this tournament.
Rees-Zammit scored after Nick Tompkins had drawn in the defence, and near the end Webb darted in after fine work from Johnny Williams on debut.
Sheedy kicked the rest, with two penalties and a conversion as Los Lelos were locked out. Wales did look better, albeit against vastly inferior opposition.
The set-piece horror-show in Ireland was shored up by two wall-like men in Wyn Jones and Samson Lee – Pivac saying before he had picked them as Wales’ best two scrummagers.
The win meant Wales ended a shocking run of six consecutive defeats.
This inevitable victory is welcome for Pivac, and arrived eight months after his first where Wales also kept Italy scoreless, but the acid Test comes against the English next week. He cannot afford to get badly burnt then.
‘Across the board we took a step in the right direction,’ said Pivac.
‘There were guys trying to take the ball in motion and use a bit of footwork. At times, we did that and we were able to get in behind and get some quick ball.
‘On a drier day, with the dents that we made, we’d have been a lot more dangerous. If people were at the game, they’d appreciate how difficult it was.
‘England are a totally different proposition. They are a formidable side, they have a lot of talent, they’re a big side.
‘They’re going to be a challenge, a handful. For us, we need to take the positives out of this performance tonight, which is the set piece.
‘We’ll need to build on that up against an England side that did well in that area last week.’
