Patrice Evra used the game ‘Where’s Wally?’ as an analogy for Mesut Ozil’s situation at Arsenal, with the German star continuing to be frozen of the squad by manager Mikel Arteta amid the club’s lack of creativity this season.
Ozil, 32, who is under contract with Arsenal until June 2021, is the club’s highest earner on £350,000-per-week but has not played for Arteta’s side this season after being left out of the 25-man Premier League squad.
In a season where the Gunners are crying out for creativity after scoring just nine goals in the Premier League this season, the German World Cup winner continues to be exiled and has not featured since March.
He has recorded 77 assists since signing for Arsenal in 2013, and former Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra questioned why the playmaker has not been used more by the Spanish boss.
‘We talk about creativity. I always say when Auba doesn’t score Arsenal are going to be in trouble’, Evra said on Sky Sports.
‘We need to give Arteta time. At a big club like Arsenal time is not an easy thing.
‘We talk about creativity, where is Ozil? We play that game ‘where is Wally?’. We should do a new version with Ozil because we are talking about a lack of creativity so what’s the problem?
Ozil’s omission has been suggested to be a result of his casual playing style not suiting the modern game heavily based on pressing, and Evra did admit that the German can be ‘lazy’ at times.
‘I know sometimes he is lazy running back but we are talking about creativity now so where is Wally? Where is Ozil?’, Evra added.
Freddie Ljungberg, a coach at Arsenal until August, attempted to explain Ozil’s lack of playing time but admitted he thought he should play him when he was briefly Gunners interim boss last year.
‘Playing the smaller clubs where you think you should dominate, he should be on the pitch to unlock things with his special passes’, Ljungberg noted.
‘When you play the likes of City maybe when they have the ball all the time maybe that’s not the game for having Mesut on the pitch but if you want creativity his left foot is fantastic.’

Friends of Heavy D have reportedly revealed the Celebrity Big Brother star had told them he had a new girlfriend and was looking forward to the future in his tragic final texts.
The TV star, 47, - real name Colin Newell - was found dead on the kitchen floor of his North London home after a suspected heart attack earlier this week.
Now pals have told The Sun, Heavy D was moving on from his break-up with ex-fiancée Bryony Harris and was dating someone new.
The friend told the publication: 'He texted me a few weeks back, saying he was dating someone new and planning to cover up a tattoo tribute to Bryony.
'He was looking to the future.'
Heavy D shares daughter Rory, 14 months, with his ex Bryony, who is 22 years his junior.
The star sparked up a relationship with Bryony after she tracked him down on Twitter after falling for his boisterous personality on TV.
The couple were engaged but split on Christmas Day 2016 before briefly reuniting in February 2017 but split once again in August of that year.
Heavy popped the question to Bryony live on Fubar radio in September 2016 - and was thrilled when she accepted his proposal.
It comes as reports suggest Heavy D may have been lying dead on his kitchen floor for two days after a suspected heart attack.
The CBB star had reportedly not been seen for a fortnight and was silent on social media and his phone for the past week.
His brother Patrick went to his home when he vanished after visiting costume designer friend Lorna Onabanjo in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex, on November 14.
Speaking to Mail Online, another brother Michael said: 'He last spoke to a friend of his a week ago because the pair of them had planned to have lunch together but Colin wasn't well and said 'I'm a bit under the weather, let's make it another time'.
'That was the last thing he said to anyone.
'He was always on social media, he practically lived his life on it, but he suddenly went quiet for a while and that worried people.
'Tommy and a few of Colin's other mates rang me and my brothers to check if we'd spoken to him. I called him on his phone but it went to answer machine.
'My brother Patrick went round to see him yesterday to check on him and knocked on the door of his flat in Enfield but got no reply. He peered into the kitchen window and then saw Colin lying on the floor.
'The police were called and they think he may have been lying there for at least a couple of days.
'We don't know what the circumstances of his death are but I believe he could have had a heart attack. I can't say for sure though.
'It's really sad. My brother was the life and soul of the party, a larger than life character who brought fun into people's lives.'
Heavy D's ex Bryony said she was beside herself with grief at the news of his death.
She wrote: 'Heartbroken. I loved this man we argued we hated each other but we had love at one point and a beautiful daughter rest in peace you silly thing.'
Heavy D, who weighed in at 23 stone, shot to fame after appearing as a buyer on the UK version of Storage Hunters.
In August 2016, he took part in the 18th series of Celebrity Big Brother but became the fourth person to be evicted from the show.
He was also known by the nickname, The Boominator because 'Boom' was one of his catchphrases.
Heavy D was a huge Arsenal fan, and often appeared on ArsenalFanTV.
The football channel paid tribute to him on Twitter, writing: 'We are shocked to hear the sad news that Heavy D has passed away today.
'Our condolences go to his family at this very sad time.'
