Angie Jakusz, a fierce competitor on Survivor’s tenth season filmed in the island-country of Palau, passed away on January 8 after a hard-fought battle with cancer, according to People.
The former reality contestant, who was born and raised in Wisconsin, was diagnosed with a rare form of colon cancer in November 2017, according to a GoFundMe created by her husband of nine years, Steven Calandra.
‘A graveside service was held on Wednesday afternoon in Metairie, Louisiana’ for Jakusz, who worked as a bartender and an artist, according to the outlet.
She was survived by her husband, parents, brother, niece and nephew.
Jakusz was just 25-years-old when she appeared on the reality competition series in 2005, where a group of contestants are stranded in a remote location with little more than the clothes on their back and a shot a winning $1 million.
While she was first targeted for her 11 colorful tattoos and losing the first challenge, the star performed well in many challenges and won over her tribe and viewers.
Eventually, she voted off in 13th place and, most recently, was seen on Survivor’s ten-year anniversary party in 2010.
‘She broke the casting barrier. Fans related to her story so much. And a lot of people wanted to see her play again for her strength,’ Survivor: Palau contestant Coby Archa told People of Jakusz’s legacy.
He continued: ‘She wasn’t into the fame, just the experience of Survivor. She came, she played, and she went back to her life in New Orleans. She liked her life that way.’
According to a GoFundMe, she was battling a rare form of squamous cell colorectal cancer, but her husband appeared optimistic that she would ‘make a full recovery.’
At the time, he even noted the cancer had an ‘80% success rate among patients’ and reminded fans that his wife was ‘healthy and strong.’
‘Angie is an amazing, creative, fearless and all around bad a** woman. She’s a painter, designer, seamstress and baker,’ he gushed of his wife.
Calandra also noted that ‘it took three months to diagnose Angie’s illness’ and, at the time, she ‘was without insurance.’
‘With all the tests, scans, days off work, and medication her medical expenses piled up quickly. We are looking to raise $30,000 to cover these costs. All of the money raised will go directly towards the bills Angie incurred during her diagnosis,’ he wrote.
Her hobbies included painting, reading, traveling, sewing, painting, doing nail art, snorkeling, scuba diving, among many more.
She is the second cast member from Survivor: Palau to die, ten years after Jenn Lyon passed at the age of 37 after she was diagnosed with stage-three breast cancer.
Six other Survivor contestant have died since the show’s debut in 2000, including B.B. Andersen (2013), Caleb Bankston (2014), Dan Kay (2016), Ashley Massaro (2019), Rudy Boesch (2019), and Cliff Robinson (2020).

Diane Kruger looked absolutely beautiful in a new Instagram selfie with her lookalike mother Maria-Theresa as they enjoyed a stunning sunset on a leisurely hike.
As the actress, 44, smiled softly at the camera, her 70-year-old mother stood closely by her side as they savored the last magical moments of the day together.
'Date night with the mama,' the German star captioned the sweet shot, which she shared with her more than 959,000 Instagram followers on Thursday night.
In the snap, she can be seen sporting a green floral blouse and her bright blonde hair slicked back in a low updo.
Kruger appeared to be wearing minimal makeup as she bared her flawless skin apart from a few swipes of blush, which highlighted her youthful complexion.
After gracing the latest cover of Vogue Greece, she opened up to the outlet about her days as a model in Paris and the pressure to adhere to 'beauty standards of the time.'
She reflected to the outlet that she made 'many mistakes' in her career, explaining: 'Especially when I was a model, I was influenced by the beauty standards of the time, I ended up weighing very few pounds. But also as an actor, I have participated in films that I would no longer choose.'
Her fashion career took off in the mid-1990s amid a trend of razor-thin models like Kate Moss, who were described as 'heroin chic.'
Diane, who has acted in English, German and French, dished: 'I think I also went through a period of terrible arrogance. I spoke three languages fluently, I was a model, I had achievements, I was smart, I made a lot of money. All of this, of course, collapsed when my life proved my ignorance of many things.'
The Inglourious Basterds actress said: 'I lived in the fashion bubble. Around the age of 30, I embarked on an introspection journey and escaped all this hypocrisy.'
In 2018, she gave welcomed a baby girl, whose name has yet to be made public, with her boyfriend Norman Reedus.
Two weeks ago, she and Reedus rang in the new year with a quiet night at home, complete with funny masks and some champagne.
'I love you ❤️ If we survived this year together we’re in it for the long haul U n Me,' she wrote on Instagram, adding a rabbit emoji.
In the snaps, Kruger was wearing a black and white patterned blouse with a colorful, feathered mask covering her eyes as she smiled for the selfie.
While sitting side-by-side, Reedus gave her a kiss on the cheek as he embraced her with a silly mask of his own, with a champagne bottle and glasses on their table.
Reedus and Kruger both met in 2015 while filming the movie Sky, though they weren't seen as a couple until July 2016, after Kruger had split with Joshua Jackson.
The couple will be staying busy in the new year on the acting front, with new film and TV projects as she is set to be part of an action-packed ensemble in the female-driven action movie The 355, which hits theaters January 14, 2022.
Meanwhile, Reedus returns as Daryl Dixon in the final season of AMC's The Walking Dead, which will be spread out over the next two years, ending in 2022.
