Sony Pictures’ Stage 6 Films sets up a sequel to the innovative 2018 thriller Searching

Sony Pictures is moving forward with a new sequel to their critically-acclaimed 2018 thriller Searching, though it won’t be a direct follow-up.

The original thriller followed David Kim (John Cho), whose 16-year-old daughter Margot (Michelle La) goes missing, told through an innovative format known as ‘Screenlife.’

The sequel will tell a brand new story from the original, with Will Merrick and Nick Johnson, who worked on the original Searching, making their directorial debuts, via Deadline.

The sequel will also showcase what’s described as, ‘an evolved Screenlife thriller format, where the story unfolds through the screens (phones, laptops, etc.) of the characters.

The first movie followed David as he broke into his daughter’s laptop and other devices to search for clues to her whereabouts, while a police detective (Debra Messing) works on the case as well.

Merrick and Johnson are directing from a script they’re writing themselves, based on a story concocted by Searching director Aneesh Chaganty and co-writer Sev Ohanian, who will both serve as producers on the sequel.

Also producing is Timur Bekmambetov, who pioneered the Screenlife genre by producing films such as Unfriended and Profile, plus Natalie Qasabian and Adam Sidman.

Jo Henriquez will serve as executive producer and Congyu E is co-producing the project, which is expected to start filming this spring.

‘With such restrictive visual parameters, a movie like Searching 2 requires a fresh visual style to separate it from the original,” Chaganty said.

‘I’ve contributed what I can to this growing sub-genre. But if there’s anyone on the planet with the potential to take it even further, it’s Nick and Will, who were there from the beginning,’ he added.

Bekmambetov added, ‘Searching is so far the most successful movie shot in the Screenlife format and the sequel is set to become a new milestone.’

‘What seemed like an experimental technique a few years ago has been given a momentum now with more and more industry professionals turning to this digital filmmaking technique,’ he added.

Merrick and Johnson both served as the editors and the ‘directors of virtual photography on the original Searching.

Searching debuted at Sundance in January 2018 to rave reviews, earning both the Alfred P. Sloan Award (given to the film that embraces science and/or technology) and the NEXT Audience Award.

It was picked up for $5 million by Sony Pictures shortly after its debut, and arrived in theaters in August 2018, with a 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a worldwide gross of just over $75 million, against a budget of just $880,000.

Премьер-министр Михаил Мишустин распорядился выделить дополнительные 5 млрд руб. на субсидирование авиаперелетов для жителей Дальнего Востока. Об этом сообщается на сайте правительства.

Выделенные средства будут направлены на снижение тарифов на перелеты по 22 маршрутам. Речь идет о рейсах в Москву из 14 городов (Магадан, Южно-Сахалинск, Хабаровск, Владивосток, Петропавловск-Камчатский, Анадырь, Благовещенск, Мирный, Нерюнгри, Певек, Полярный, Улан-Удэ, Чита, Якутск) и в Санкт-Петербург из семи городов (Благовещенск, Владивосток, Мирный, Петропавловск-Камчатский, Хабаровск, Чита, Якутск).

Воспользоваться авиабилетами по сниженному тарифу смогут все пассажиры, зарегистрированные по месту жительства на территории Дальневосточного федерального округа. Согласно сообщению, субсидия позволит около 450 тыс. человек сэкономить на перелетах.

13 января авиакомпания «Аэрофлот» сообщала о приостановке бронирования льготных билетов на рейсы между Дальним Востоком и Центральной Россией из-за того, что деньги, выделенные на субсидирование данного направления, закончились.

В тот же день российское правительство выделило 5 млрд руб. на финансирование авиаперелетов на Дальний Восток в связи с высоким спросом на льготные билеты.

Images showing the internal structure of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, have been revealed for the first time thanks to a 3D scan.

Geospatial mapping specialist GeoSLAM produced the never-before-seen digital images of the inside of the famous statue ahead of its 90th birthday on October 12.

Emblematic of the city of Rio de Janeiro and the nation of Brazil, the concrete clad statue stands 98 feet tall and spans a mammoth 92 feet wide.

The digital re-creation of the iconic statue involved more than 180 million points of data - taken from a drone-mounted laser scanner and someone walking up and down the staircases inside the statue using the same scanner.

The new digital images will allow people to virtually explore this world-famous monument in ways never before been possible - inside and out.

In 2019, the statue was visited over two million times, with people from all over the globe travelling to admire the monument, which soars 2,320 feet above the city.

To create the sensational images, the team from GeoSLAM used the latest SLAM (simultaneous localisation and mapping) and unmanned aircraft technology.

To complete the scan, the summit of Mount Corcovado, where the statue is located, was closed to the public for 45 minutes - allowing experts including Gabriel de Barros Praxedes, to scan the entire site inside and out.

The narrow staircases and tight internal passages were revealed as part of the scan, which involved using a laser scanning tool called the ZEB Horizon.

This emits 300,000 laser points per second, scanning the statue gradually as de Barros Praxedes climbed the stairs inside the iconic creation

The same ZEB Horizon scanner was then mounted to a drone to allow the the team to capture the full, detailed exterior of the monument.

A series of 3D scans containing over 180million points was captured, producing a comprehensive digital model of the giant monument in all its glory inside and out.

The data was then processed through GeoSLAM Hub, software used to process the vast amount of information gathered by the scanner.

This allowed the team to see the results of the scan before they even left the site, including the network of internal staircases the team had climbed.

Commenting on the never-before-seen feat, Barros Praxedes, said the results of the scan were at a high level of detail - showing the moment as never seen before.

He said the statue had to be scanned 'from the face, hands and robe, to the staircases inside and carved marble base beneath it' which was a lot of detail'.

'I’m in awe of the capabilities of this technology and the clarity of data produced,' he said of the scanner the team used, adding 'we’ve been able to capture the statue in a totally new light, that almost no-one has had the privilege to see'.

'This is one of the most recognisable statues on the planet, and a symbol of hope for many Brazilians near and far, and I’m delighted to have been able to capture it in its current form before the restoration works gets underway.'

GeoSLAM’s solutions are being used more and more to aid in the documentation and management of historic or hard-to-reach landmarks, the firm said.
