Kevin Pietersen believes under-fire Tim Paine has 'never, ever been up to it' and has captained his last Test for Australia.

Criticism has flooded in from all sides after India consigned the Aussies to a first defeat at the Gabba since 1988 with a stunning three-wicket victory this week, that secured an improbable 2-1 series win.

Paine was called out by Aussie greats Shane Warne and Adam Gilchrist for his leadership during the series and was mercilessly mocked on Twitter after his sledging of Ravi Ashwin spectacularly backfired.

And Pietersen has joining in the condemnation. 'I believe that Cricket Australia will soon be looking for a new captain – Paine has never, ever been up to it,' he wrote in a blog for Betway.

'He got chucked into that position when Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft got caught up in the sandpaper controversy, but from my perspective, having played against him and watched him, he's not an Australia captain. He's just not a good enough player, apart from anything else.

'I would never have made him captain in the first place, and he's probably never going to lead them into another Test match.'

Paine himself has cast doubt over whether he will still be Australia captain for the Ashes next winter amid the fallout of defeat in Brisbane.

Paine said he 'won't look past the next series' but believes there is still 'unfinished business' if he continues to lead the side.

'I still feel like I want to get better. We've got some unfinished business… and I intend to finish that,' he said while being jeered by Indian fans at the Gabba.

'I've said many times in the last two or three years that I don't look past the next series.

'I'm loving it. I'm going to cop heaps of flak, I know it.

'That's what I signed up for…. I'm totally fine with that.'

Wicketkeeper Paine has been Australia's captain since March 2018 after Smith was embroiled in a ball-tampering scandal involving the use of sandpaper in South Africa.

But his time may be drawing to a close in the wake of a thrilling series in which a depleted India team recovered from the humiliation of being bowled out for just 36 in the first Test to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

'I think at times their tactics haven't been good enough and I suppose that's got to come down to Tim Paine as captain,' Warne said on Fox Sports.

'It's not just Tim Paine's fault, the bowlers are allowed to say "Tim I want to do this", so it's a combination between the bowlers and the captain.

'But, at the end of the day, you are captain, you have to take responsibility. He'll be disappointed.'

Gilchrist added: 'Captaincy wise, I think he'll reflect on some of the tactics that he put in place in Sydney [in the drawn third Test] and even here maybe in the first innings, trying to chase down those 10 wickets against India.

'Maybe it's taken a little bit of the gloss off his captaincy and his leadership, particularly the incident in Sydney where he came out and admitted that he just got it wrong.'

That incident came when Paine attempted to sledge Indian batsman Ashwin during the third Test, saying: 'I can't wait to get you back to the Gabba, Ash, woo hoo.'

Ashwin replied: 'I can't wait to get you back to India, it will be your last series.'

Paine then said: 'At least my team-mates like me, d***head. I've got a lot more Indian friends than you do. Even your team-mates think you're a goose.'

A 91-year-old man has undertaken a stunning attempt to cycle the equivalent of Land’s End to John O’Groats and back again in an effort to raise money for charity.

In highlighting the plight of people all over the country who have lost access to grassroots sport during the pandemic, Bahman Farazmand has been keeping fit by riding a static bike every day in his living room in Cheam, London since March 2020.

Having clocked up a total of 2,038.8km in the past 10 months, Farazmand is now pushing to reach 2814km by completing at least 5km each morning before 9am.

‘I’m doing it to stay alive and stay fit,’ Farazmand said. ‘I want to still be here for my Grandson’s wedding in June.

‘If I manage to cycle 5km a day, I hope to be finished by the time it is safe for me to go back to the gym. I miss my friends and the nice coffee bar.

‘I was going to the David Weir Sports Centre gym five days a week and on March 8, 2020 I stopped because of Covid-19. My son leant me his exercise bike so I could still keep fit at home and here we are.’

Farazmand is raising money for the Roundabout Dramatherapy charity.
