After a dominant first day at Galle for England, in which Sri Lanka recorded their lowest every first-innings total at the ground, LAWRENCE BOOTH looks at the main takeaways from the action...

When Sri Lanka’s No 3 Kusal Mendis edged his second ball from Stuart Broad through to Jos Buttler, it was his fourth successive Test duck, following three in South Africa.

It means Mendis has now fallen to five of the last 13 deliveries he has faced in Test cricket.

Another duck in the second innings, and he will equal the Test record of five in a row, held by Australia’s Bob Holland, India’s Ajit Agarkar and Pakistan’s Mohammad Asif.

Sri Lanka’s 135 all out was the lowest first-innings total in a Test at Galle, beating their own 181 against Pakistan in 2000.

Three previous Tests in Sri Lanka had brought Stuart Broad a grand total of three wickets at 83 apiece.

His figures of three for 20 on Thursday took him to 517 in Tests, only two behind West Indies legend Courtney Walsh, who is sixth in the all-time list.

Broad almost feels like an all-rounder in this England side. His Test tally of 3,335 runs is the team’s third-highest, behind Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow.

And, in this side, his left-handedness makes him an oddity: for the first time since 1994, all England’s Test top six are right-handers.

Lana Del Rey said recent comments she made about Donald Trump's presidency and the riot at the US Capitol were 'taken out of context' as she defended herself from criticism on social media Tuesday.

In an interview with BBC 1 Radio, the Chemtrails Over The Country Club songstress, 35, said the President 'didn't know he was inciting' last Wednesday's violent insurrection in Washington DC and that his divisive presidency 'needed to happen' to America.

But Lana, who often finds herself at the center of controversy, tried to set the record straight after several outlets called out the interview for its seemingly sympathetic view of Trump and the rioters.

She dissected her statements on Twitter, telling followers: '...What I was describing w the BBC was that Trump is so significantly impaired that he may not know what he was doing due to his significant lack of empathy and the wider ranging problem is the issue of sociopathy and narcissism in America.'

'I’ll say it again I don’t appreciate the larger magazines taking my well-intentioned and believe it or not liberal comments out of context. It’s actually what I sing about quite often. It’s what I’ve been condemned for saying. You can listen to the entire interview,' Lana continued in a subsequent tweet.

She finished with a concluding tweet directly addressing an outlet that published a takeaway from her interview, along with a preemptive slight another magazine:

'I also want to say that I don’t appreciate Complex magazine inferring that I thought it was right to storm the capital. After my long term relationship with them and exclusive interviews over the last 11 years I think it’s pathetic if Rolling Stone chimes in-same goes for them'

Later on Tuesday, the Video Games hitmaker posted a long video testimonial to her social media, in which she further commented on how she feels she is perceived in the media.

'I really don’t appreciate being painted as some white Republican who’s always been given everything and supports the incite of the Capitol riot,' the star said at one point. 'I grew up struggling, working my a** off, we had nothing, period.

'I personally don’t get it. I just think sometimes because of the way I look, it’s easy to paint this picture, but man, did I struggle to become the genuine singer-songwriter I am,' Lana continued.

Later, she discussed her staying power in the industry, and why she feels it's important to fight back against her detractors.

'People do not last a long time in my workplace…it’s fun to tear people down, but it really discourages them from moving onto their next project,' the Grammy nominee added.

'This is my story, I’m telling it…I’m the wrong person to come for when it comes to not being inclusive or liberal. Not that I ever focused on either one. I always just focused on the music, but if people want to make it political, I’m down, but listen to the entirety of the 40-minute interview.

'So…I don’t want to have to focus on this, but it is what it is. I’d love to get the point one day where we just talk about the music, but until that day, I want you to know my story.'

As the caption for the video post, Lana wrote, 'Talk about it. Get it out of your system. And then GFYS'.

The social media activity comes after another post from Sunday, regarding the cover for her new album Chemtrails Over the Country Club.

In an added on comment connected to the post for the cover image, Del Rey seemed to preemptively take on haters, insisting that she is 'extremely inclusive without even trying to' and has had 'rappers' as boyfriends and best friends.

'My dearest friends have been from all over the place, so before you make comments again about a WOC/POC issue, I’m not the one storming the capital, I’m literally changing the world by putting my life and thoughts and love out there on the table 24 seven. Respect it,' she concluded.

Lana’s sensitivity here most certainly comes from backlash stemming from comments she made last summer, in which she insinuated that musical artists like Beyoncé, Doja Cat and other predominately women of color have been treated better than she has when it comes to the way they express themselves in their music.

Those comments created a similar storm of social media activity from the singer, when she tried to defend her point of view.
